How to Connect Your Anthropic Claude API Key to QKeyboard
How to generate a Claude API key from the Anthropic console and connect it to QKeyboard's BYOK feature for rewrites with your own account.
Anthropic's Claude models are known for careful, natural-sounding writing, which makes them a popular choice for rewrites and tone changes. If you already have an Anthropic account, you can connect a Claude API key to QKeyboard through BYOK in a few minutes.
Step 1: Create a key at console.anthropic.com
- Sign in to the Anthropic console at console.anthropic.com.
- Open the API Keys section of your account or workspace settings.
- Create a new key and label it something you will recognize, such as “QKeyboard.”
- Copy the key right away, since the full value is usually shown only once.
Anthropic's API is billed separately from any Claude.ai subscription, so you may need to add billing details to your console account before requests will succeed.
Why some users pick Claude for rewrites
Claude models are generally regarded as strong at maintaining a consistent tone and avoiding overly generic phrasing, which matters when you are rewriting a message in your own voice rather than generating new text from scratch. If you care about the rewrite sounding like something you would actually say, Claude is worth trying as your BYOK provider.
Step 2: Connect the key in QKeyboard
- Open QKeyboard's settings from the app or the keyboard menu.
- Go to the AI Provider / BYOK section.
- Select Anthropic / Claude from the list of providers.
- Paste the API key you generated.
- Select a model.
- Save.
The key is stored in the device Keychain rather than on QKeyboard's own servers, and it is used only to send your rewrite requests directly to Anthropic.
Daily limits with BYOK
QKeyboard's built-in AI is limited to 20 rewrites a day on the Free plan. Connecting your own Claude key raises that limit to 100 rewrites a day on the Free plan. On QKeyboard Pro, there is no daily cap regardless of whether you use BYOK or the built-in AI.
Usage through your own key is billed by Anthropic directly, separate from any QKeyboard subscription cost.
Common issues
- A failed request right after setup usually means the key was not copied completely, or billing has not been set up on the Anthropic console.
- If you switch models later, you do not need to re-enter your key — just pick a different model from the same settings screen.
- You can revert to QKeyboard's built-in AI at any time without losing the saved key.
