iPhone Keyboard Privacy: What Full Access Really Means
iOS requires Full Access for third-party keyboards that use the internet. Understand what this permission actually allows, what it does not, and how QKeyboard protects your typing.
Every third-party iPhone keyboard that connects to the internet shows the same warning: “Full Access allows the developer to transmit anything you type.” It is an alarming message, and it is also incomplete. The permission exists for a reason. Understanding what it actually controls helps you make an informed choice.
What Full Access is — technically
iOS isolates third-party keyboards by default. Without Full Access, a keyboard cannot:
- Access the internet.
- Access location services.
- Read or write to its own container on disk.
- Access the device microphone or camera.
With Full Access enabled, the keyboard gains network access and container storage. It does not gain access to your contacts, photos, messages, or other app data. The permission is scoped to the keyboard extension, not the entire device.
Why an AI keyboard needs Full Access
An AI keyboard processes rewrite requests through a language model. That model runs on a server. The keyboard needs to send the text you selected for rewriting to the server and receive the result. Without Full Access, the keyboard has no network connection and cannot perform any AI features.
Apple Writing Tools avoids this by running the model on-device. But on-device models are smaller, less capable, and only available on the latest iPhones. Cloud-based AI keyboards trade on-device privacy for better rewriting quality and broader device compatibility.
What QKeyboard does — and does not — transmit
Transmitted only when you request a rewrite:
- The text you explicitly select or the full text field content.
- Your chosen writing mode (Professional, Concise, etc.).
Never transmitted:
- Your typing history. QKeyboard does not record keystrokes.
- Text you type but do not submit for rewriting.
- Text in other apps or other text fields.
- Your location, contacts, or any personal data.
The transmission happens once per rewrite request, is encrypted in transit (HTTPS), and the AI provider processes only the text needed to generate a rewrite. QKeyboard servers do not permanently store your rewrite requests.
The Keychain advantage for BYOK users
If you use BYOK (Bring Your Own Key), your API key is stored in Apple Keychain — hardware-backed secure storage that iOS uses for passwords and payment information. Even with Full Access enabled, other apps cannot read the key. QKeyboard does not store the key on its own servers.
Should you enable Full Access?
If you want AI rewriting anywhere on your iPhone, yes — there is no alternative. The permission is required for the keyboard to contact an AI provider.
Before enabling, verify that:
- The keyboard maker has a clear privacy policy stating what is transmitted and what is stored.
- The keyboard supports BYOK if you prefer to control which provider processes your text.
- You can revoke Full Access at any time from Settings → Keyboard → Keyboards → [Keyboard name].
If you are uncomfortable with the permission, use Apple Writing Tools instead — it runs on-device and needs no network access. The tradeoff is fewer features and a single rewrite style.
The bottom line
Full Access is a broad permission described in alarming language, but for an AI keyboard it enables exactly one thing: the network connection needed to rewrite your text. Choose a keyboard that is transparent about what it sends, limit transmission to explicit rewrite requests, and enable BYOK if you want full provider control. The permission is a tradeoff, not a trap.
